Company History
Since 1986, Lazer has continued to grow by providing innovative graphic communication
solutions for our clients. Here are some highlights from Lazer's history.
1986
Lazer Photo Engraving is created as the electronic prepress division of a large
commercial printer.
1991
Lazer Photo Engraving opens its doors as an independently-owned company with six
employees led by then President and former owner, Karl Scheible.
Lazer launches ScanBank, one of the first Digital Asset Management Systems specific
to the graphic arts.
1992
The Education Center is opened to train Lazer’s customers in the electronic
production of marketing materials and packaging.
1994
Lazer opens the first digital photo studio in the upstate area, Professional Color
Services (PCS), with co-owner John Myers Photography.
Lazer Photo Engraving changes its name to Lazer Incorporated, and its business classification
from Prepress to Digital Services. The changes reflect Lazer’s growing commitment
to the digitalization of the graphic arts and an expansion of nontraditional services.
1996
Lazer opens its first full-service prepress facilities management operation for
Marketing Services by Vectra, a large commercial printer in Columbus, Ohio.
1997
Lazer opens DigitalXPress (DXP), one of the first full-service digital printing
companies in Rochester, N.Y.
In cooperation with Hexachrome’s inventors, Lazer becomes one of the first
firms to perfect the creation of 6-color separations for Hexachrome printing, for
two of its largest customers.
Lazer develops one of the first variable data print applications for the 401(k)
market. The system constructs personalized 401(k) reports using advanced cross-platform
database and document-creation technology. The system wins first place at the Print-on-Demand
Show for Innovative Use of Technology.
1998
Lazer provides its first online version digital asset management, LazerWeb, solution
to two of its largest clients.
Lazer opens a new division in Winston-Salem, N.C., to better service its local customer
base with three full-time employees.
1999
Lazer opens Lazer Design Services to support the packaging and catalog design needs
of its growing client list. It's earliest catalog-design client includes Petsmart.
2000
Lazer opens a facilities management operation to handle the complete print production
management of Ontario Foods, a large private label food product manufacturer.
2001
Lazer doubles the staff of the North Carolina office, adding production capabilities
including high-end color scanning, digital color proofing, retouching and color
correction.
2002
In March, Lazer adds a digital photography studio to its Winston-Salem, N.C., facility,
including all necessary equipment and full-time digital photographer.
After nine consecutive awards from the National Association for Printing Leadership
(NAPL), Lazer is inducted into the Management Plus Hall of Fame. This award is presented
to only one company from the entire industry each year.
In September, Lazer opens a new division in East Aurora, N.Y., to support a growing
Western New York market. The facility is the new home to a team of highly skilled
graphic arts professionals and the latest technology.
2003
In July, Lazer moves to a new facility in Winston-Salem, N.C., doubling the size
of its existing space. The new facility offers a large production area and full-service
digital photo studio.
2004
The 2003 Team Cheer catalog, designed and produced by Lazer, is a finalist for Catalog
Age's 19th Annual Catalog Awards for the Consumer Specialty Products category. Catalog
Age named 60 finalists in 24 categories from a field of nearly 300 entries.
In December, Lazer opens a second digital photography studio, in its Rochester,
N.Y. facility. The studio is equipped with the latest large-format digital photographic
equipment from Sinar.
2005
Throughout 2005, Lazer continues to expand its Winston-Salem, N.C. and East Aurora,
N.Y. locations, adding additional staff and equipment. Both locations have full-service
creative services, mechanical layout, color proofing, retouching, and account services
capabilities.
In November, Lazer makes a major upgrade to its Winston-Salem, N.C. photography
studio. Lazer adds new digital photography equipment from Sinar and Canon, expanding
its imaging capacity and capabilities.
By the end of 2005, all three Lazer facilities have matching, large format inkjet
proofing capabilities, employing equipment from Epson, X-Rite, and BEST (now EFI).
2006
In January, Lazer upgrades its graphics platform to Artwork Systems’ Nexus
comprehensive high-end workflow solution for label and packaging environments. Both
Lazer’s Rochester, NY and Winston-Salem, NC offices utilize the Nexus platform.
Nexus allows Lazer to provide a higher level of flexibility, quality, and turnaround
of print-ready files to its clients.
Also in January, both Lazer’s Rochester, N.Y. and Winston-Salem, N.C. offices
upgrade to the latest Kodak Approval NX Digital Halftone Proofing System. The new
Kodak Approval NX systems allows Lazer to meet a wider range of customer proofing
needs with unparalleled precision, control, speed, and economy.
2007
In November, Lazer Incorporated relocated thier Rochester headquarters
to 1150 University Avenue, #20. Lazer is now centrally located
within the University Business Center and the heart of Rochester’s Neighborhood
of the Arts (www.notaba.com). A successful open house is was held in early December to showcase
Lazer’s talented staff and its suite of graphic services.
